Earth Day blog hop

This is the second post on my blog today - yeah, I know, I don't blog for ages and ages and then there's two on one day! - so if you'd like to check out the post I have here for the Counterfeit Kit Challenge mini challenge #2, please scroll down to the next entry (here:-)

But this is my contribution to the Earth Day bloghop organised by Danielle over at EcoScrapbook so WELCOME!

If you've arrived here from Zaira, you are on the right track but if you've landed here directly, you might want to pop back to Danielle's blog to start at the beginning. I happen to know that there *might* be a prize to be won along the way so be sure to visit us all!

I started off thinking about what Earth Day means to me and how I try to be kind to the Earth on a day to day basis.

Living here in Germany, we do a LOT of recycling which has become really important to me. It takes a bit of time to do and you need to think about it all the time when you are dealing with rubbish but it has become second nature to me.

This, for example, is just a snap of some of the recycling we do in our household:

We have two rubbish bins - one for normal rubbish and one for what we call "yellow" bag rubbish which is basically any product featuring the green point/or the recycling symbol.

Practically all the packaging that comes into our house goes in there. Then there's glass bottles which will go to the bottle bank, paper which will be thrown into the paper rubbish bin outside, corks that I return to the wine shop and batteries which can be dropped into battery recycling boxes in almost any shop or public building. There's also a big bag there full of plastic drinks bottles which are either one way or multi-way deposit bottles. Anything up to €0.25 per bottle which of course is an incentive to take them back to the shop. Most drinks are purchased in returnable bottles and crates whether it's glass or plastic and that was possibly the biggest thing to get used to - all those bottles hanging around and needing to be collected and taken back. But after a while anything becomes second nature.

We also have organic rubbish bins outside (garden or kitchen waste) and anything such as light bulbs or cables or electrical trash has to be returned to the city tip where we have to then pay to get rid of it! But if you throw it in the regular trash bins outside you might be fined if the collectors see it - again, it's all about the incentive, whether negative or positive!

We also have textile or clothing recycling, car batteries, metal and all sorts of other items. When you go to the city tip, you have to tell them what you have and they tell you which container you have to use and what you have to pay for the privilege. Rubbish is expensive over here but that helps you to realise the value (negative) of rubbish and how we must find a way to recycle as much as possible.

Different bins, different items.

I feel so virtuous when I go through the motions of separating out all these different items and feel like I'm helping the Earth just a little bit :-)

But how about from the scrapbooking side of things? Well, I'm learning. And I'm learning a LOT from Danielle. I had never really thought about it before "meeting" her even though I've always made sure that the waste I generate in my scrap room gets recycled as above. But since I have, I find myself thinking about it more and more.

Today I even found myself purchasing some eco-friendly tape - who knew? I love that these things are becoming more and more prominent and I thought of Danielle and how she would approve when I picked this up today!

And my wonderful friend Pam helps me to see my products in new and interesting ways, encouraging me in her challenges to me over at Whimsical Musings to use older products, to go greener and use my packaging in interesting ways. She is SO good at making that Prima packaging or the die-cut negatives look wonderful on the page - check out some of her cool layouts {here} or {here} for example.

And I'm going to leave you with two pages I created as part of one of her challenges for WM with the theme of "going green"

Almost everything on this layout is either packaging, repurposed products or non-scrapbooking items

And this layout features hearts cut out from a favourite pair of pj trousers that are worn out but that I loved too much to throw

It's good to take a moment to think about what we can do to support the Earth and green ideas. I'm looking forward to working my way through the hop to learn some new tips.

Your next stop on the hop is Jody (SpiegelMom Scraps!) and in case you need the full list of participants, here you go...

Things I Loved... December

Ha ha! I'm determined to stay ahead of the game this year on my monthly photo reviews and I'm seriously considering making each one into a scrap page. I figure if I did that as well as my 12 on 12 (woefully behind) then I have the whole review based stuff covered and I can just dabble in whatever I like then. Still working things out in my mind but two spreads per month seems do'able. Anyway, I totally stole this idea of a monthly review from the wonderfully talented Deb *waves* and have so enjoyed looking back and seeing details to the months that might have got missed otherwise.

I participated in a 12 Days of Christmas Embellishment Exchange with the Master Forger girls over at the Counterfeit Kit Challenge and it was a blast. I was teamed up with Heavenly Helen and it proved a perfect match. I loved all the little things that she sent to me. I was so excited every day to see what goodies lay in store for me. We had agreed to mix up bought, made and from-our-stash embellies and I was delighted to receive several of Helen's famous (well they are now!) layered hand-made flowers. *sigh*:

In return, I sent her these 12 parcels full of my goodies and both sides were happy and content!

I had visitors the weekend before Christmas and it was lovely to have the chance to catch up and spend a few quiet hours together. A market visit complete with Glühwein was of course, a must:

I managed to sneak in a few of these before the end of the TNL season:

I completed the last of my Jingle Belles cards and was delighted to find that I'd completed 60. It was so great to have them all ready to be written:

There were English lessons at the Christmas Market as well as lots of fun indoor lessons too:

Not as much as last year, but snow was sighted in my neck of the woods the week before Christmas!

And even though the tree stood there au naturel for several days, it finally got its face lift and I was tickled pink (pun intended) with the result:

There were fancy dinners, a perfect turkey and silly party hats:

Completed by all round prettiness:

2012 can come and do its best. I'm ready for it. ;-)

It's the details that count

I'm guest blogging over at the Counterfeit Kit Challenge again and today I'm talking about the details that make up Christmas or this time of year, depending on what and how you celebrate the season.

I also used this idea for Challenge #18 over at the Whimsical Musings blog and Pam has already posted her wonderful layout with several, until now, unrecorded details of Christmas - such a wonderful layout.

I'm hoping to get to mine later today.

For the CKC blog post I made one of my favourite layouts of recent months. All credit goes to October Afternoon as it's a pretty straight direct lift but I still adore the details and it was such fun to make.

Anyway:
Today I’d like to talk to you a little about scrapping all the small things that make up this time of year. And I’m not talking about the little scamps that many of you have running around getting hyper-excited at the thought of all those presents, though.

Yes, today I’m talking about non-kiddie scrapping! In fact, let’s try scrapping even without people.

Just a few of the things that I see right now that make me get into the jolly feeling are:

·       The arrival of the Toffee Nut Latte at Starbucks

·      The opening of the Christmas markets here in Germany

·      The Advent wreath and the lighting of the first candle
·      The tree (oh how I love my tree!)
·      Cookies, or rather Plätzen in German, preferably home baked if I have time

·      The food and drink that’s only available at the Christmas markets – Poffertjes and Glühwien
·      Sparkly fairy lights on the balcony
·      My sometimes un-traditional coloured decorations

I find that my Christmas scrapping mostly involves these details rather than the main events – the dinner, the presents and the people – because these are the things that add the sparkle to Christmas for me. I’m not going to forget the dinners we have or the members of my family but I might forget how excited I was when I tasted my first Toffee Nut Latte, or how beautiful my pink baubles were.

So this year, I decided it was time to record the first Poffertjes of the season. Never heard of them? Nor had I before my first Christmas Market. They are a Dutch speciality and are sort of tiny, mini, puffy pancakes that are served with butter and icing sugar. They are simply divine! You can read about them here. I was inspired by a layout from the October Afternoon blog featuring an over-laden banner and pretty much lifted it completely!

This layout makes me smile and is another piece in the puzzle of what makes Christmas for me. I had such fun using up all those bits and pieces on my layout - sprinkles of sequins, buttons, bling, labels and twine. It came together really quickly and makes me want to do the same over and over again!

What details are missing from your scrapbook pages? Try to identify one little thing that is part of Christmas for you and record it. No kids allowed!

If you do join in, make sure you let us know at the Counterfeit Kit Challenge blog and also over there at Whimsical Musings! It's never too late to join in and we love to see new faces and challenge creations!

Things I Loved... September

Ok, so I'm a *little* behind on this!

In August, Deb did a wonderful photo round up of the month and posted it on her blog. I jumped onto the idea (of course) and joined in (here).

Then at the end of September, I just didn't get around to it.

And another month goes by. So I'm just going to get back on track and give you the things I loved back in September.

Such gorgeous weather at the beginning of autumn.

A certain little Diva in the family started school and true to German tradition received a Schultüte full of sweets (that she told us off for!) and school supplies.

Somebody special (clue here) had a birthday and received this from me in true scrappy style!

Then I travelled home to Birmingham and caught up with these three darlings...

And met these two cuties for the first time. They are quite adorable but the best thing was seeing how my sister is totally head over heels in love with them!

I met up with some of my school friends (go 3S!), a few of whom I haven't seen for more than 25 years and attended an open day at our school. We exchanged news and laughed about the old times remembering the good and sometimes the downright bad times at King Edward VI Handsworth School.

It was lovely to go back, catch up and look around. But there's no way I'd want to go back in time and be a teenager again!

Our school hall which is as glorious today as it was back in the day.
Never fails to fill you with pride when you walk in there and see this view.

I squeezed in a trip into town and decided to be a tourist in my own hometown with the famous Birmingham Bull at the Bullring. He's quite a handsome chap!

And the main event of the trip back home. Our baby brother turned 18!

And I managed to bully and boss everyone around until they lined up for a group photo. This makes me very happy.

Back home again and the 30th was 13 years since that first day at Aston Uni where destiny brought us together :-) A good day to remember and to celebrate.

And that was September.

I'll post October soon but there's not a lot to say TBH. It was a quiet month.

Happy 1st November!

Bet you don't know what I'm up to today....

.... I've got a day off.

I'm sitting inside.

I've got the TV on.

The scones are sitting on the side ready to be scoffed.

The bubbles have been poured.

And a tear or two have been shed.

Yes, I'm one of the 2 billion (!) people world-wide watching "THE" wedding today!

SOOC so it's a bit wonky! But you get the idea!

Can't help it - I've loved it all!

A Cheery Post

Well, I got some lovely ideas about what cheers you all up!
Thanks for joining in the fun.
Here's your list of happy-makers:
  1. shopping
  2. purchasing scrapbooking supplies
  3. a nice dinner out
  4. getting messy creating something from a piece of pretty paper
  5. fossil hunting
  6. a finished LO that looks pretty and featured one of my lovely children
  7. sunshine after a gray yucky day
  8. a clean scrap area
  9. a smile from one of my boys first thing in the morning when they are sleepy and happy
  10. my family
  11. my friends
  12. the promise of brighter days ahead
  13. chocolate
  14. wine
  15. great pictures
  16. good food (especially chocolate!)
  17. hearing from my daughter or son just for the heck of it
  18. having an evening to myself to get one of those it-seems-neverending-projects done
  19. recently my youngest daughter discovered a Jack in the Box. We were out shopping yesterday when I showed it to her. When it (a sock monkey) popped up, she said "That scared me. Again!" This continued numerous times and we ended up buying it. She was so cute
  20. a bit of sunshine
  21. spending time with my girls
  22. a shiny new magazine
  23. lazy sunny days spent with friends & family,
days where nobody has a care in the world and is totally relaxed and having fun
  24. popping in to others' blog homes: it's like having a cup of tea on their veranda
  25. a visit to a very well-stocked bookshop, with some money in my pocket to spend, preferably
  26. a cup of chai tea: my most recent taste sensation
So, it's pretty clear that we get a lot of joy from family and friends, sunny days and being outside, scrapbooking or other crafty/creative activities, and not to forget food and drink!

And I agree with all of you!
Here's just a few of mine - in no particular order!
  • A good book, a glass of wine (or even better, a cocktail from my own "personal" cocktail bar) and some Cadbury's

  • A cuddle from adorable little ones

  • A cuddle from an adorable big one

  • Good food - asparagus season is just about to start and I have some of the early crop ready for dinner tonight... I can't wait!

  • Sitting on the balcony, just taking in the life around me

  • Experimenting with my camera and taking photos that I love

  • Some new scrapbooking products

  • Scrapping my stories, showcasing my photos and feeling a sense of satisfaction when I see completed pages

  • Sweet memories of favourite places

So I promised a giveaway and using Random.org (and I promise that I put 1-12 not the 100 that it shows here!)  the lucky winner is commenter number 4:
