Sketches, layouts and cards

I'm not managing much scrapping right now so it's great that I have the Counterfeit kits and challenges to at least get me to my table from time to time. And the challenges make it all so easy. Win-win situation.

This time around we were asked to create a page and then use it as inspiration to make a card. Love this!

I headed over to Page Maps again and found a super cute sketch (here) to use and off I went. Another old photo with not much of a story which gave me the chance to write a few private words and in a jiffy, my layout was made.

Next up came the card and I just took the basic parts of the layout and made a simple greeting card that will be perfect for a hello to a girlfriend sometime. Love having these types of cards just waiting for the right time.

Stitching on paper - inspired by quilting

Last weekend I posted about Clair's wonderful Stitching on Paper class in which I have the honour of being one of the GDs.

I had the chance this week to catch up with the first 5 lessons and they really are super. Interested in paper? Love stitching? Than you have to check this class out and say hi to Clair while you are there. There's even a super prize on offer.

In the meantime, today's lesson is being inspired by quilting and I also contributed to this lesson and it was so much fun. I decided to go back to my patchwork beginnings and made a page as a tribute to my Granny who taught me to patchwork nearly 40 years ago!

I chose an old-fashioned patchwork design and made it out of paper scraps. I stitching around each piece to give it some definition and didn't worry about how messy it was. I've never been a perfect hand-stitcher (all my patchwork is done by hand) so it matched the feel I was trying to create. I so love how this turned out and it really made me want to go back to my fabric patchwork again - who knows, I might just do that ;-)

And just to add a couple more examples of how to use this inspiration, here are a couple of projects I don't know if I've shared before.

Online challenge fun

Now, if you visit here often you'll know that I love all the online challenges around in blogland. And how about a online challenge that tells you to go off and find an online challenge to join in!?! That's the first mini prompt for the Counterfeit Kit Challenge this month and if you go over there you can find a good list to check out for starters.

I'm feeling a bit uninspired right now so I decided to head over to Page Maps and found a lovely sketch there to join in on. I love sketches for times like these when I'm struggling to find a starting point and who doesn't love Page Maps?

I used my August Olympiad kit for this and based it quite closely around the sketch. I really like how it turned out except the journalling. So, I'll probably cover that up and do it again - maybe with journalling strips.

I've used this photo before but I came across it just a week or so ago, fell in love with it all over again and decided to just make a layout I like rather than a big story.

Which online challenge will you choose? So many choices. So much fun!

Stitching on Paper - embroidery

You remember that I told you about Clair's free class? And I hoped you checked out the first two parts last weekend where she gave you lots of inspiration and know-how for where to start (here for the basics and here for machine stitching) as well as yesterday's part about using stamping for inspiration when stitching.

Well, today's part is all about embroidery and using embroidery on our pages and I was thrilled if a little daunted when Clair asked if I could contribute to this section. Gulp!

Now, I love sewing and I love sewing on my pages but I'm ever so slightly (ok, very!) lazy and don't get around to it all that often, and when I do, it's usually pretty basic. So I knew I had to get creative this time around and try out a couple of new things.

I started off my adding some mist splats (Glimmer Mist) to my cardstock and then creating a small layered photo element with pink (what a surprise) papers from my scrap box. I knew that I wanted my stitching and other elements to sort of radiate out from this point and I knew I wanted to go pretty. So, because I'm not a good doodler so I was happy to fish out my stitching template (Bazzill?) to create some swirls in cream and pink as a starting point. 

Then I decided to get knotty. I love the look of French Knots and decided to tackle them with the help of the internet. Now, the trick to these knots is that they take a bit of practice (some of my earlier attempts are not so successful!) and you need to take them slowly, but once you've cracked it, they are super fun to make and look so cute scattered around.

Once I had finished those, I added some blanket stitch to opposite corners of the page, just for a bit of dimension and because it took me back to primary school when we would create little felt needle books or something similarly "useful" items. It was a fun trip down memory lane!

At that point, I thought that I was done but while looking up a few stitches online, I saw pretty chain daisies and decided to give them a try. They were a bit more difficult to make neat and even but somehow, I felt they added the final, perfect touch.

This prompt really made me go the extra mile on the stitching and the result is just gorgeous!

It doesn't happen often that I take the time to stitch so much but I always love the end result.

And here's the stitching template being put to good use again on a Christmas card from last year.

And one last one to share - here, the embroidery is a little more subtle and I just created those little stars freehand.

Embroidery is a great way to add something extra to your layout without making a whole lot of bulk. It may take a bit of practice and time but the end result is always worth the effort.

August Counterfeit Kit Challenge kit reveal blog hop

Welcome to the August Counterfeit Kit Challenge blog hop kit reveal.

The inspiration kit this month was a digital kit by The Scrap Orchard, Summer Lovin' by Chelle's Creations. It's a pretty big kit with loads and loads of stuff in it, so it was fun to counterfeit and has produced a pretty big kit for me too.

The colours proved a lot brighter than I usually go for and I really liked the elements of green.

I started off as always, by picking out some neutral cardstock and then added in a red, a dark blue and a buttery yellow (some black was also added in after I took the photos) and then obviously, I didn't have any of the real product so I had to really think about how to approach the kit. So I took each sheet in the original kit and just went with matching up the colour or the design type or maybe just the feel of the paper - small print for example, or solid colour. 

There's a lot of paper in there, this kit is much bigger than I usually make and all the papers are double sided (or at least most) so I have a lot of choice:

And then the fun bit, all the embellies. I had the list printed out of what was in the inspiration kit, and it's a LONG list! So I went through and just picked out the type of embellies I have or what would go with the papers. There's a whole lot of older stuff that I want to try and use or lose as well as some things that I have no idea how to use on a page so it will be interesting to see:

Several alphas also slipped in there as I wanted a lot of variety becuase the kit is so big. There are several things on the list that I left behind and some random stuff I three in just because. I am really interested to see how I get on.

This was a fun kit to put together because of the fact that it was so enormous and there was no way to match up the items exactly. I like the result but we will have to see how it works in reality!

The reds, yellows, blues and greens jumped out at me and then I decided to add in the black alpha and some black cardstock and hey presto, Olympic colours which prompted the name " Olympiad".

Hopefully this kit will prove a winning combination for me (excuse the pun!) and I'm excited to see how yours comes together. Don't forget to link up your creations over at the blog.

Counterfeit Master Forger Virtual Swap Challenge

Ah ha! You might be wondering what on earth I'm talking about but over the last month or so, the CKC Master Forgers have been participating in a virtual swap and I'm here to tell you what that is and how it went.


We decided on a virtual swap as we are an international team and what with delivery times and costs, it seemed a better way to go. So we were asked to compile a list of ten items that we would like to "swap" with our partners. The idea was that it could be five generic items and five specific items. With or without photos. Or we could even make such a specific list that we could provide links. Then it was our choice as to exactly how we would interpret the list - maybe purchase the items or counterfeit them or just find these items in our stash. 


Once we received the list, our challenge was to then create a layout based on the items. I tell you, this was a lot of fun and I will be doing this again in the future with some of my scrapbooking buddies across the ocean!


I sent my list to Margie and she has done wonders with my list! Go on over to her blog (here) and see what she did (and she's included the photos I sent her). I do believe Margie managed to get every item onto her page! My list to her was:

1. white cardstock
2. patterned paper with a gorgeous mix of soft aqua and coral colours and an on trend design. Something like hot air balloons, clouds, maps or chevrons. eg. What's Up by BG
3. A chipboard alpha. eg Amy Tangerine Thickers - Goodness 
4. Some pearls or bling eg a yellow pearl swirl from Lost and Found by My Mind's Eye
5. Flair buttons/badges eg the badges available from Studio Calico
6. Twine
7. Stick pins 
8. Tape of some sort
9. Assorted die cut shapes eg. the What's Up collection bag of mixed die cuts
10. A stamp or stamped image of some sort

And then I received my list from Rebecca:

1. A Polaroid-frame shape (either a cut-out shape or something pre-printed that looks like a polaroid print)
2. A marker/pen other than black
3. An office supply item (something not specifically marketed as a scrapbooking item)
4. A pattern paper background (instead of a cardstock background)
5. Brads
6. Paper with some shade of orange on it
7. A scrap of paper from your scrap pile that's smaller than 6x6
8. Twine or floss
9. Flock (or something that's already pre-flocked)
10. Something that makes a glossy finish (UTEE, glossy accents, etc.)

This was a great list and really made me stop and think about what to use and how to use it. I managed 7 of the items missing out the flock, the brads and the paper background as I was determined only to use my scrap box for the whole layout with a cardstock background. The challenge to use paper with some orange in it pushed the whole colour scheme and I love it. I don't think I have any orange left any more as I've also been using it on cards this month. I scraplifted myself which made things move along easily and decided to change things up a bit by clear embossing a butterfly onto the vellum envelope. It's hard to capture in a photo but let me tell you that it's gorgeous IRL!

Looking for a hero

Our friends over at Counterfeit Kit Challenge have asked us to think about those people we look up to - a bit of hero worship is called for.

Well, I have two confessions to make.

First off, this is a challenge I've actually done twice relatively recently with three layouts, so finding a new angle to take was a little difficult for me. I've already done my other half and my grandfather, and then a little more tongue in cheek with Jacob, my werewolf hero. (here, here or here).

And then second confession... Once I had decided what to make my layout about, I realised that both my CKC kits that I have here (June's Subtlety and July's Beach-house) didn't really have any suitable supplies for my layout. So I have to say that I "cheated" and added in a whole load of product to my July kit so that I could make my layout how I wanted it!  BUT I did use the red tape from my July kit and also a teeny tiny alphabet I had in my June kit so it's not like I didn't use ANYTHING! *wink wink*

But let's face it, anything's allowed, right? There are no rules!

So, onto my layout. And in this special GB year - I'm currently sitting in front of the opening ceremony for the London Olympics, feeling very proud of the show they've put on - it only seemed appropriate to go into a little more detail about someone I'm very proud of. Someone who I consider to be a true Heroine.

Come and celebrate

Are you going to celebrate a special occasion for the latest Counterfeit Kit Challenge? A birthday perhaps? Or an anniversary? Or maybe Easter, Christmas or New Year?

Now I love making pages like that but this time around I just decided to celebrate something small in my life.

My Beach-house kit is still making me very very happy! I love the (admittedly only) three layouts I've made from it so far and I'm looking forward to having a bit more time to really get going with it - whenever that is!

A gift of cards

The first challenge is up over at the Counterfeit Kit Challenge blog and they'd like us to make cards for Operation Write Home which is such a very good cause.

However, as a non-American, I thought I would take the concept and make my cards for someone in my life who needs to know that I'm thinking of them. Someone who is having a rough time right now and lives a long way from me so I can't be there to give them a real hug.

Instead, I'm letting her know that she's in my thoughts with a gift of a pack of pretty cards.

I used up the scraps from my May Whispers kit and had a lot of fun making each card a bit different and trying out different stamping techniques on them. I used a lot of details from other cards I've made recently but am happy that each one is different.

All wrapped up in pretty pink ribbons and ready to go.

So, Whispers is finally finished and the small amount of scraps that were left over are back in my scrap box. I made a total of 9 layouts with the kit which makes it another successful kit and I will share the 5 layouts I haven't yet posted on here soon.

So, grab your kit (or just a bunch of scraps like I did) and make someone happy with the gift of a card.
